1. For anyone that hasn’t read the writing on the wall, it’s time to start the exit plan for Solaris. It seems pretty clear that Oracle only want Solaris to run databases on, and that means any other use is going to rapidly become un-tenable.
The security angle? Well, I admit that mainly this post is an excuse for me to use the photo above, but running anything on a neglected OS leads to security breaches sooner or later. As the best admins move on and systems get put in the “legacy” state, they rot, and Solaris isn’t like IBM mainframe OSs, protected by obscurity.
I’d say moving everything except Oracle off Solaris within 12-18 months is looking like a really good strategy.
